On Monday, June 26, 2000, Boston Red Sox shortstop, Nomar Garciaparra and the Nomar 5 Fund hosted the first annual "Nomar Bowl", a charity bowling tournament. The event was held at the Town Line Ten Pin in Malden, Massachusetts and benefited the Massachusetts Sports Partnership and the Boston Housing Authority Youth Centers Program. In attendance were corporate sponsors and entertainment, fashion, and sports celebrities. Over 100 bowlers participated and a celebrity headed each team.

Some of the celebrities in attendance at the fund raiser were Red Sox teammates of Nomar Garciaparra like Jim Rice; fashion designer, Joseph Abboud; E! Television's Jules Asner; Suzanne Crier of TV's "Two Guys and a Girl"; pop star singer, Joey McIntyre; and Women's World Soccer Cup champion players including, Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, and Kristine Lilly. A large crowd gathered in the parking lot to greet celebrities upon their arrival and to shake hands and get autographs. There was plenty of noise and excitement out there; and radio station KISS 108's morning guy, Billy Costa, revved up the decibels coming from the young girls in the crowd by playing a game, the winners of which won tickets to an N'SYNC concert and other prizes.

In addition to sponsorship of the lanes which totalled $100,000, a live auction brought in an additional $90,000. The "Nomar Bowl" will help support the refurbishment of five youth centers in low-income housing areas and will help children ages 6-12. The Nomar 5 Fund reflects the five values that Nomar feels are most important: Family, Education, Sportsmanship, Citizenship, and Respect.
